Virginia state law has required licenses for dogs since 1972, the General Assembly of 2006 and 2007 has brought changes to our licensing process. Effective July 1, 2007 area veterinarians are required to notify localities when a rabies vaccine is administered. If an individual does not apply for a dog license within 90 days of having their dog vaccinated they will be billed for the license in the locality in which they reside. If they fail to purchase the license at that time, animal control will be notified that an owner is in possession of a vaccinated animal without a current license.

It shall be unlawful for any person to own a dog four (4) months old or older in the county, unless such dog is licensed. Licenses can be purchased at the Treasurer's Office.
