Laser Therapy

Overview

Laser therapy is a surgery-free, drug-free, noninvasive treatment to reduce pain, inflammation, and speed the healing process. A high-powered therapeutic laser delivers calculated dosages of laser energy (photons) painlessly and efficiently to both superficial and deep tissue. These photons absorb into the cell without damaging it and induce a response called photo-bio-modulation, resulting in improved healing. Don’t worry, this is not a painful process!

How does laser therapy work?

The area being treated will become warm, but there is no poking or prodding your pet. After their first treatment, your pet may seem a little sore, but that is just due to the tissues being stimulated and working a bit harder to heal. Studies indicate that laser-treated wounds heal in a third to a half time faster than the typical healing time. Just a single laser treatment can reduce swelling and speed up the healing process post-surgery. Skin wounds, abrasions, bite injuries, dermatitis, and burns all respond well to laser therapy.

Orthopedic issues such as arthritis, trauma, back disease or injury, and degenerative joint diseases can also benefit from the addition of laser therapy to your pet’s current treatment regimen. We recommend scheduling an appointment with one of our veterinarians to evaluate if your pet would benefit from laser therapy.

Treatment protocols are unique to each patient and condition, varying in time, complexity, and cost. Other than post-surgical laser treatments which are often a single dose, we schedule a series of 6-10 laser treatment sessions over 3-4 weeks in order to give your pet the best opportunity for healing. Your veterinarian will then re-evaluate your pet and determine a maintenance protocol, which may be weekly, monthly, or as needed.
